Essentials of Protein in Our Diet
Protein, made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, is an essential component to each living cell in the human body. Protein serves as the compound necessary for cell structure repair and growth in many of the body’s tissues, such as muscle, and plays a key role in metabolism. Protein is also responsible for the formation of enzymes, antibodies, hormones, blood-clotting factors, and blood-transporting proteins. When protein is ingested, it is broken down in the stomach and small intestine by hydrochloric acid and pepsin into smaller compounds called amino acids.

Those with osteoporosis are at increased risk for bone fractures and breaks. You may have recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis or you may be at high risk of developing the disease. Being female, older, thin-framed, of the Caucasian race and exhibiting a family history of osteoporosis can put you in a high-risk category. Many of the essential nutrients that your body needs to function properly are found in a diet that is full of fruits and vegetables, low-fat proteins and whole grains. By completing a three-day food record, which is a record of what you consume for three days, you will have an objective baseline tool that you can use to improve your diet, and in turn, experience more energy and reduce your risk for developing chronic disease.

Adequate Vitamin D to Maintain Bone Health and Boost Immune Function
Calcium, a component of a healthy diet, has long been known to play a vital role in maintaining optimal bone density and keeping your bones healthy as you age. Calcium supplements have been a mainstay in women’s health for many years in the prevention of osteoporosis, and have probably been recommended by your doctor, especially if you have a family history of low bone density or osteoporosis. Less emphasis, however, has been placed on the equally significant vitamin D and its role in the maintenance of optimal bone density, needed to prevent osteoporosis. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption to occur in your intestine and is needed for effective bone growth and the constant turnover of bone cells, known as bone remodeling. Vitamin D is needed in conjunction with calcium to ensure that your bone density remains at the proper level.

The Weight Loss Mind Game
Since 68% of Americans are considered either overweight or obese, a rate that continues to grow, and $35 billion is spent annually on weight loss products and services alone, there seems to be a disconnect between the hard work that people put into losing weight and the results that they achieve. Many people underestimate how important a healthy mind set can aid in their weight loss efforts and find that no matter how hard they work, they can’t seem to reach their goals.

Bone Health: What Can I Do?
As Orthopedists, my colleagues and I specialize in the treatment of Osteoporosis (weak bones), and Osteoarthritis (inflammation and degeneration of joints). Roughly one out of every four people in the world suffers from OP or OA. OP and OA greatly increase the risk of fractures and chronic joint pain, and to this point, Orthopedic surgeons have traditionally relied on medicine and surgery to treat these disorders. The challenge that we faced was two-fold; preventing bone loss and promoting joint health...

Making Sense Out of Nutrition News
Around every corner is the latest article or news segment on a newly published research study that overturns all previous knowledge on a particular subject. A perfect example of this common phenomenon is the research that came out of New Zealand in April of 2011 that found a link between calcium supplements, which many women take for bone health, and heart attack. Interestingly, another study was conducted by the same organization, which found no evidence of increased risk of heart attack among women who were taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Inconsistent information can lead to confusion, and sometimes even panic, especially when it has to do with your own personal health and nutrition

Dealing With and Overcoming Your Gym Fears
This year, you have made the decision to start exercising to get into the best shape of your life, for your family, for your kids, or maybe even for an upcoming reunion. However, one main obstacle stands in your way. Joining a health club almost brings you to a state of panic. Maybe working out in the same room with all of those hard bodies gives you flash-backs of high school gym class, being picked last for the kickball team or failing the mile run. You may be afraid that people will stare at you, that you won’t be able to figure out how to use the machines, and that you will look silly performing what you think is exercise. The fears of intimidation and embarrassment may have kept you from using an expensive membership in the past, wasting your hard-earned money.

Working Out in a Winter Wonderland
If you live in an area where it snows, you probably understand the dilemma that faces most fair-weather exercise enthusiasts, as autumn ends and winter begins. The winter cold tends to push us into our shells, as we are naturally drawn to the warmth of the indoors, rarely venturing out into the freezing temps for a workout. Some find it hard to exercise at all, as the winter doldrums set in and the hours of day light grow short. If you are not particularly into the extreme winter sports like downhill skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling, try some snowshoeing this year. Snowshoeing is a fantastic way to prep your physique for the summer months and burns a whopping 250-300 calories for 30 minutes of work. If you are cutting your own trail through fresh powder, you are liable to burn even more.

Exercising During the Freezing Cold
During the time of year when it is still dark outside when your alarm goes off and when you get home from work, and you find yourself in a mental battle every time you head outside in the freezing cold to get your cardio in, you may find it difficult to maintain your exercise routine, especially if you work out in the morning. You may find that adjusting your routine and bringing in some reinforcements may help you continue on in victory, in spite of the cold.
